The paper industry today adds synthetic compounds to meet performance standards. Alkyl ketene dimer (AKD), a chemical compound used as a sizing agent, is added to paper to control its ink and water absorption properties. AKD, when released into wastewater, is harmful to aquatic ecosystems, all the while, polluting our water streams. It also reduces the quality of the recycled paper and makes it less desirable for reuse.
